Sorry, forgot to give an update on this. I picked up a Pearson Tacrail for the 30-30. Shipped pretty quick but sent the wrong rail then had to get that corrected. It was an easy install, no issues there.
We took it to Academy and had it bore sighted to 100 yds, which is basically getting us onto the paper. We got it out to the range a while later and got it fairly tweaked in at 50 yds and then 100 yds, at least good enough that we were both satisfied with it.
The only issue is that the scope is mounted so far forward, but there isn't much we can do about it. We both had a good time with it, so that issue really doesn't matter.

You might think about an intermediate eye relief scope. Should give you a clear picture even mounted that far forward.
Glad you didn't have to modify the gun.
