Good to know the barn swallow lijes mosquitoes. That's probably what attracted her to my place. I'm told that once they nest they will return every year.
Migratory birds are federally protected. May be a couple, thinking house sparrow and starling, that are not but most other birds are protected as songbirds.
Pileated Woodpecker dug a hole in my tree in a few hours like your hole and big pile of chips on the ground
While I didn't see the bird doing it, I have seen a Pileated nearby a few times. Makes sense, the other woodpeckers could live in those holes.
