I have had to spend more than a few weeks, in my life living off MREs while I was in the Seabees. And it was always bad on everyone gastrointestinal systems. For prepping and long term food storage, we chose to go with Mountain House. These were some of the reference links that confirmed my body's aversion to MREs or IMPs both are bad foul chow, that produce mutant turd babies:

PS: IMPs are Canadian and British MREs.

Work with a vet of Desert Storm, he carries a bottle of Tabasco sauce in his pants pocket. Have seen him the sauce on everything from bacon to PB&J.

BTW, MREs do NOT have a shelf life, IF the are sealed and not swollen, they are viable.

We prefer dehydrated and wife uses DH regularly in our meals to prevent some of the afore mentioned side effects.
