I have a 427" BBC short deck that is not put together..I have been saving it for almost 25 years.
One day I will put it together.
.030" over steel crank, stock 3.76" stroke and 781 heads I ported years ago and 2.19-1.88 valves.
11:1 pistons and a Crower cam.. back then it looked like a decent cam and today I would probably go larger.

It is a 274FDP or part number 01349

Mechanical Flat Tappet
Valve Lash .022" intake and .024" exhaust
Lobe center 105
Advertised Duration: Intake / Exhaust 274 / 288
Duration @ .050" Lift: Intake / Exhaust 242 / 252
Lobe Lift: Intake / Exhaust .273 / .285
Rocker Ratio: Intake / Exhaust 1.7 / 1.7
Gross Valve Lift: Intake / Exhaust .564 / .587

Back then I wanted hard pulling out of the hole and no more than 600" lift and no more than 260@ .050 duration.
Power brakes were not on the cars I had.

Today Knowing what i know I would go more duration.
I have ran 252@ .050 on a 106LSA in a 355" with 10.3 compression and power brakes still worked .. it pulled 10.5" vacuum.
That small block went mid 11's, vehicle weighed in at 3000 lb.

Gas sucking pig though.
I would probably run the old crower grind as it would be fine for a daily driver and trailer puller.
But if I wanted to never pull a trailer I would add 20 degrees more duration.

Of course a Tall Tunnel-Ram and 2 carter AFB carbs to top it off.

But never dealt with the tall deck. I do know it is .400" taller and many like to stroke it 4.25" or more and run a long rod.

But I have always been one that tries what he has on hand to begin with.
I get using what you have on hand, but if you had the chance, would you stroke a BBC and run a long rod?

I have thought about that believe me.
I followed the BBC for many years and Traco built some really nice ones.
My 47 dodge truck came with a 396 standard bore and stroke that was in a super gas chevelle that 396 started life as a 425HP 396 and no porting ..it ran factory pistons and only change was cam and intake ..it made 625HP at the crank and ran 9.8 at 145 in the 4 speed 411 geared chevelle.

Yea it was buzzing 8000-8500 on the shifts.

The way i see it today people are afraid to Rev things. I like RPM.
Brutal off the line Torque of a big engine usually over powers the tires and starts breaking things.

I have ran mid 11's many times with ported iron 305 heads on top of flat top 350's with cast crank and cast pistons.
I have put the hurt on many BBC 454's. No, mid 11's is not super quick today but 91 octane and not a huge tire and no power adders and nothing breaks .. that is peace of mind.
I would bet they made 440 HP or around that at the crank.

The above 427 I got all the parts for will easily make 570 HP. That would be plenty to keep a grin on your face and tire rubber on the fenders.
I do not have really heavy vehicles so the 454 or 496 and larger to me are not needed.
Now if you weigh 4000+ lbs the added low end torque of larger cube BBC would help the launch out.

I was researching blocks last week and thinking of a 4.5" bore or larger and 3.76" stroke. 8000rpm 500" BBC.

I have friends with 850HP 540" BBC's and Nitrous on top of that and they run 8's in the 1/4. Without leaning on it too hard.
I do not need to go there.
I wonder what that super gas chevelle with 396" would do with 300HP of NOS stuffed into it.

Of course the rules back in the 1970 era allowed those cars to be very light.
I like a light car it is easier on the drive train.
