Styrofoam is a great insulator and should be a standard in construction... That being said, it's pretty lazy to assume drilling, cracking, refining, hydrogenating, molding, and throwing away a finished product is somehow easier that washing a dish... Styrene products are wildly carcinogenic under the right accidental conditions. It's also a challenge to recycle, but if you've got a drum of petrol, have fun with it... Just be upwind of the black smoke:)

I understand and agree with the argument opposing Mayor Bloomberg on 2nd Amendment issues, I also understand the argument about the soft-drink size issue but why does a styrofoam cup ban also cause you issues? This seems to be a classic case of hating the message because you hate the messenger rather than on the basis of rational discussion.
This doesn't appear to be a "nanny State" issue at all - it is a pragmatic discussion of what can or cannot be put into city managed landfill or recycling sites. If you want to use stryofoam - pay a surcharge or find a private firm that will haul it to a facility that will handle it. If you need to use styrofoam - appeal for an exception or relocate.

Styrofoam, GM(Government(Taxpayer Screwed) Motors), cronyism solar(belly up & taxpayer screwed) power generation, cronyism wind power generation, EPA mandated 15% Flex Fuel gas(destroys motors), 16oz. drinks, CFL lightbulbs, low/no flush toilets, salt, butter flavored coconut oil popcorn, taking firearms away from law abiding citizens while criminals/gangs/druggies run free/armed, ramming laws/healthcare programs/social programs down our throats with no reguard to what effect the laws will have on our lives/incomes, etc., etc., etc. There is not one thing pragmatic about it at all. If there are those that like to live under a dictatorship why don't they relocate to Venezeula, Cuba, N. Korea, Iran, Socialist Europe, Socialist anywhere, etc. Then they can feel right at home(excuse me, wrong wording), then they can feel "leftist/socialist" at home and then they can be dictated to, over taxed, bullied, persecuted, intimidated, harassed and oppressed to their little hearts content. Bloomberg is just the tip of the socialist iceberg and we are all sailing on Obama's Titanic Ship Of State/Government.

so what type of insulation panels will be allowed if styrofoam is banned? this will inevitably drive up construction costs as well as a side effect.

What are you talking about? Styrofoam and Closed Cell Cellulose or Soy Based Spray Foam are NOT equals, or even in the same world. Rigid FOAM panels are a completely different chemical makeup than that of Styrofoam as well, And if you want good insulation use SPRAY in Cellulose or Spray foam, nothing is even comparable. maybe blown in Denim and cellulose, but even then its not as effecient as Closed Cell Spray.
