Snap ring? You'll have to humor my ignorance - this FH came on the rifle so I don't know a darn thing about it. Are you talking about the thin ring closest to the barrel in the photo or the large metal cuff on the FH? I think the cuff is part of the FH, it doesn't appear to be removable.

Okay... in the event that the FH was removed, removing the snap ring would enable you to remove the cuff, but in my present situation it accomplished nothing.

Damn, that is a snap ring. Can't believe I'm just now seeing it. Don't see how it could be the culprit. However, if it was mine, I'd sure give it a try. Remove it and see if the FH just slips off.

It would if it were a round peg in a round hole. Maybe it's not. It could be keyed.

How hard is it to remove a snap ring? Of course, having snap ring pliers would help.
