It will be muuuch cheaper to convert it or have someone do it for you. Under $100 diy as opposed to $200+ to have a shop fill the r12. I can't even think of somewhere that would fill it to be honest. It's really simple to convert it, just look online for a how to.

There is no real reason you must convert. R12 is getting cheaper all the time since demand has hit the floor. You can find it on Craigslist all the time for like 30 bucks a pound. There are also quite a bit of drop in replacements.

Except that it is illegal to own without a license.....

He is not wanting to vent it. he is wanting to get a mechanic to install it for him. and it is not a license it is a certificate that can be easily obtained via an online test if you are worried about it. Look into a 609 certificate. ( I'm fairly sure 1# or less cans of 134A and topping off a 134A system does not require a 609 )

^ this guy...... sigh...

Bottom line is you would be better off just retrofitting it, it's cheaper, more efficient and hassle free. :) Might see what they say down at ABEL racing in MWC, they work on a lot of early JDM's so I bet they have some R-12 laying around if you want to shell out the $$
Good luck!
