I would not shoot a new gun without cleaning, lubing, and inspecting it first. Also, check any fasteners. This way, if you do have any problems on your first range trip you are familiar with the gun.

clean...whats that? seriously though, i'm usually to excited about a new gun to tear down and clean. straight to the range,blast away, then clean....maybe.

Suggest you patch/swab the bore to remove any crap/etc., and check the feel/function of the action to determine if some lube is needed.

Then, if needed, put a little lube at major points of wear, and shoot some full power loads.

The carry/tactical pistol should function with minimum wear-in, otherwise you may want to think about sending it to a good pistolsmith for some reliability work before you carry it.

Different story for wad-cutters (target pistols) which are built much tighter and may require several rounds before they feed/eject reliably, springs matched to ammo, etc.

And there are lots of 1911-clones out there, some seem to have been built for the purpose of removing dollars from your pocket, not for functioning reliably (these tend to make people buy Glocks).
