I know EXACTLY what you mean. It's no different on the machined parts. The paper work was insane. A detailed inspection report with every single dimension and the measurement on it. Metallurgical analysis report, heat treat time/temperature plots, NDT certs, every anodize, paint, assembly, sealant, etc., etc. Certifications for everything! Every single part literally had a book that went with it. When you put it all together for the whole assembly the paperwork really did weigh more than the assemblies. But we didn't have to have clearances, we didn't have more than machined part blueprints and processing specs. They ended up at ATK that was formerly named Morton-Thiokol.

Sound exactly like what we have to do, every serial number of every screw documented then verified and re-verified by a officer. I know where alot of our government money is goin to though, they spend $900 dollars on a washer when I can go to Lowes and get the same one for .05 cents lol.

Interesting. I worked on the engine nozzles for the one we retrofitted to be an intercepter. I forget which rocket it was, but it was a 3 stage and one fast sumbitch. Went up some 1500 miles and 2500 miles down range in under 5 minutes...

(1500)^2 + (2500)^2 = (h)^2

= 2915.48 miles / 5 minutes

= 583.096 miles/minute

or, = 34,985.76 MPH

That seems to be at least an order of magnitude off. I'm sure it was fast... but THAT fast?!?!?

Believe me, I thought the same thing. On hindsight it seems that the altitude I stated might be too high, I dunno, maybe not, can't remember. But I distinctly do remember that the test shot out of Vandenberg went 2500 miles downrange over the Pacific. The total burn time for all 3 stages put together was just under 6 minutes. There was no more fuel available, at least that's what we were told. That test was a full on system test less an actual warhead on the incoming targets. It had to find an one "enemy" missile out of four total that were launched and kill it. It did. Cool stuff!

You know which base the missle was from? If it was from FE Warren its a good chance I built the reentry system.

No clue. But they were testing out of Vandenberg.

Kinda funny now that I think about it. My mom worked for Boeing out there, my dad was stationed there and I was born there on base. Dad was damn near killed right before I was born. They were filming a launch of some missile from a C47. They lost telemetry which was common back then, and as soon as it comes over the radio, the pilots understandably scrambled like rats. Dad was well on his way towards going out the open door but was grabbed by someone. I guess it was just supposed to be that I got to be involved with missiles in some way.
