I actually like MREs.
I actually like MREs.
I'm sorry folks, but I don't recall too many hot "meals" when I was playing with my Uncle Ho's cousins. Most of what we had to eat were C rations, and if we wanted them hot, we heated them ourselves.
There were many times when we had nothing to eat for 2 to 3 days at a time.
I don't recall anyone blaming Nixon for that.
I was merely pointing out that hardships in the field are not directly the fault of the C n C, that is all
I'm gonna join the "get over it" crowd. It's hardly the end of the world that breakfast isn't cooked by someone for the soldiers while facilitating a pullout of forces. It clearly says the chow hall offers cereal and other items plus they get an MRE for breakfast and a midnight meal. Troops writing home for cereal is overly sensationalised for effect in this article. So the truth is probably that the chow hall has Cheerios while the troops want Cap'n Crunch. Clearly the author is trying to make the current administration look bad (they are doing that themselves) for something that isn't even an issue. I imagine if you gave the troops the choice between having a sausage and eggs for breakfast while staying in country longer or eating cereal and getting home sooner they would choose the latter every time.
When I was in the military it wasn't wartime and, by comparison, it was a much easier life. However, chow hall breakfast sucked butt. Just talking about it brings back memories of the stench of rotting food and garbage next to the chow hall. The food was terrible consisting of scrambled eggs and shells, some kind of mystery meat or a meat sludge on toast ( classic sh*t on a shingle). After a week of that cereal was a blessing or *gasp* even a MRE.
The men and women serving over there are tough and I seriously doubt they will be brought to their knees by cereal. Frankly the author of this article should be ashamed for painting our troops as whiny little children complaining about their breakfast. If getting them home sooner means feeding them Cheerios for breakfast or midnight meal so be it.
