Police chiefs: Congress needs to protect those who protect our communities
BY BILL CITTY, VIRGIL GREEN AND NORMAN MCNICKLE | Published: March 10, 2013 Oklahoman

Bascially they came out and called for Universal Background Checks. Not real clear on the details they are suggesting though.

"Because the forms are held by more than 60,000 dealers — not the federal government — this decentralized approach protects the privacy of gun owners. It prevents a national registry, which is also prohibited by federal law. This system enables law enforcement to find gun traffickers who are driving violent crime in our cities — and it should apply to background checks for private sales."

You know, maybe they are on to something. Let's have an illegal drug registry which will make it much easier to track illegal drugs and drug dealers...

I agree. Congress needs to protect those who protect our communities. Those protecting the community are the legal law abiding gun owners. Police bat clean up when the crime is doing no go searching for the bad guys after the fact. So of you want to protect the communities, protect the rights of the gun owners within the communities.

Favorite quote from the article: "We shouldn't create legislation that only law-abiding gun owners will follow, while giving gun traffickers and criminals a free pass"

The only people that follow any laws are the law abiding gun owners! No law you make is going to make criminals step back and think, "hey, they mean business this time! I have to follow the law now!"

You forgot Stillwater in the title. So we have the Chiefs of two high profile towns in Oklahoma coming out in support of UBC and by default the registration that must come with it. Didn't someone say we "don't have to worry about this in Oklahoma" or something? Yeah right.

I like that they have come out. Now it's time to find out how they got their jobs and how we go about taking them away. They are either elected officials or they are appointed/hired by elected officials.

Not enough room in title area and yeah i read the same post saying not to worry. So far we have been making gains in gun rights, but I believe it is highly dependent on public perception. If these chiefs and other local figures were able to sway public opinion the other way, I believe it wouldnt be long before our reps and sens would follow the herd.

William Citty was appointed to Chief by City Manager Jim Couch in October 2003.
