Got my first shotgun at Otasco in Chickasha, 1981. I was 13. Break over single shot 20 Guage. Man that thing took down some quail. Swam a few creeks and got droped in the pond once. Still got it. First "car" gun I owned, never left home without it.

Wow...what memories. Dad and I used to spend many Saturday mornings at the Otasco in downtown Tulsa back in the fifties. The store was huge and each floor held its own adventure awaiting. The smells of tires, inner tubes, and gun oil were worthy in their own right alone for a visit. Dad knew the three guys that started the venture so each Saturday trip brought some new such and such for me to try out.

It was such a good memory, I passed trips to Otasco along to my three sons. They always looked forward to the Christmas catalogue simply because,"Santa Clause knows all girls and boys love Otasco's games and toys. Have a very merry Christmas from Otasco".

Thanks to all for re-living a simpler time.

Bought my first rifle from Otasco in Edmond almost 60 years ago, an British 303, 17.99 out the door, carried it 8 blocks home over my shoulder. couldn't afford the smaller "tanker" version with the flash hider, it was 21.99 - mowed lawns most of the summer and saved up the 17.99 plus tax,,,if memory serves the sales tax was 2%

And in those days, a 12 year old kid could buy a box of ammo-any ammo. But something happened...

Yeah - and there's lots of opinions out there on that. My summary opinion is that we lost our country because lots of people didn't have the stones to say "NO!" Plenty of detail behind that, including what timeline establishes the Point of No Return but that's another thread.

I do like the theme that's developed here with OTASCO as a primary source for lots of first guns for kids. Makes me smile...

Yep. Bought my first gun with money from lawn mowing at the Army Surplus store in Ponca City.
Bought and paid for it myself. H&R .410 I still own.
Dad and I carried it broken down across downtown to the savings and loan where I had my savings account from the lawn mowing, him with the barrel, and me with the butt stock/lower.
Nobody blinked an eye when we entered the bank with a gun.
