Hiked a couple miles through the Sonoran Desert this afternoon with n Arizona. Nice, warm day with no wind.
There are a lot of Saguaro cactus in this desert.
I always thought they were a big pulpy mass of cactus, but they are actually a skin that grows over a wood frame. Birds burrow through the skin to create nests within the wood frame on top of each other. You can zoom in and see the bird burrows in the cactus in the background.
Another interesting tidbit of info is that the barrel cactus in the same desert will typically have a lean to it that points south.
On my walk, found a couple dozen that were generally pointed south. I wouldn’t use them for navigation purposes, but about 80% did point south.

I got my hydraulic hose replaced yesterday morning and the brush mower dropped off at the welding shop, and the owner indicated they would ”try” to get it fixed yesterday. Unfortunately, they didn’t call me until after 4:30 to say it’s ready, and I live over 30 miles away and wouldn’t be able to get there by 5 when they close.

I‘ve been planning to come up to my place this weekend, but I really wanted to be done with at least one of these jobs. It’s not looking like that’s going to happen after this breakdown. Now, there’s rain in the forecast for Sunday, and I’m trying to decide whether to put off my trip. Everything I need to do and want to do are outside projects. :anyone:
