You could build a better rifle with a mid length gas system and the same optic for that price.

I'm pretty crappy at building things that aren't computers. Do you think I could get a complete mid-length upper and a complete lower for ~$700? Those optics seem to be $400+ online.

You can get the upper for about $319
This rifle would run you about $750 but again you could build it with Magpul furniture for about $725. Surely there's someone in the Tulsa area that would help you build it and then you would have a better understanding of how it's runs and you could do a little more maintenance on it yourself. I would love to help you build one if you gather all the parts and bring it to Okc. But the best thing about building it is that you put the parts that you want on it instead of just getting what it comes with.

How is he going to build your suggested rifle when two of those products you listed are out of stock?
Im not trying to bash your advice, but we dont know what the op wants/needs.

Op, your best route is to decide what role you want the rifle to serve, as this will determine which parts and to what standard they should be. Second, decide on your budget and dont scrimp on the important stuff. PSA rifles have a good enough rep that they may serve many roles well, and depending on what you want, it may be the right rifle for you.

This was just to show the OP that he could build a better rifle for about the same price. I built my Noveske two months ago with the exact parts I wanted. They are out there, it's just going to take a little longer than five minutes to find them. The parts in my post are just a close comparison to his link. I was assuming he just wanted a basic Ar since that's what his links are.

This is a good point. I've pretty much only shot handguns my entire life, and I want to learn to shoot a rifle. I figured the AR15 platform was a good first start due to the ubiquity of parts, complete guns, etc. It would serve that role plus a defense role in the event I am able to get to my bedroom closet. My first line is an M&P 9mm by my bedside, but I believe the handgun lets you fight your way to something bigger.

All good points. However, as we know there are basic AR's and there are BASIC AR's. what is acceptable for the range may not be acceptable for depending on to save your life. You make a good point about doing the legwork and how it can reward you with a quality gun, set up exactly as you like. As long as you have the experience on the platform to make well thought out decisions on what works for you and what doesnt, then a good mutt gun is a solid choice. I trust my life with my mutt, and built it for that purpose alone.

This changes the equation for me.
While I have used palmetto parts in some of my guns, and trust them to do their job, I only have 2nd hand knowledge of the complete rifles. What I have heard has been positive, but that info is tempered by how the guns were used. That is to say, I have not seen them used and abused in the way I expect a defensive gun to be treated and excel in that environment. Others here may have a better idea.

I would encourage you research what makes the well known, high quality defensive guns more suitable for that role. This means you are going to have to sift through a lot of marketing hype, embellishment and outright lies. Learning about what attributes make a good AR for defensive use will help you sort it out.

Caught this after my post. This is a solid gun, especially for the price. I have a buddy with the same rifle, and I have never met anyone; including in the military, who is harder on a weapon than this guy. I mean stupid hard. His gun has functioned flawlessly despite the abuse.
