Smokey (the founder of the Pecos Run N Gun) put this very well:
He was addressing his then 12 year old daughter who thought it was insane that people would drive across the country and pay money to run in the desert risking heat stroke, rattlesnake bites, and a guaranteed miserable time. He said "never underestimate what a man will do for a merit badge".

Haha... classic Smokey.

Tuesday I was at OKCGC running pistol drills. I'd like to get some more rifle trigger time in before the event, and I definitely need more running time. Being that we don't know what weather will be like or when in the day we will run, my strategy for this is all about layers, and a small pack in case I need to shed them. I'm wearing my NB Gore Tex hiking boots. Sock selection will depend on how cold it is. My M39 has officially pissed me off with its inability to reliably feed from stripper clips, so I am bowing out of the mil surp bolt gun challenge.

I like the idea of running a milsurp gun if everybody did, but the competitor in me just won't cave. I don't want to deal with bullet management when it comes to real bullets. There is the stripper clips, then the extra bullets after each stage, and then the what ifs: there is a need for a reshoot or even two reshoots or if I get that start missing phenomenon and try to correct problem by missing faster.
Don't get me wrong, I really like those old guns as a kid if that's all I had I would have ran a mil surp in a heart beat.

I'm gonna stick with the bolt gun. Just seems like a fun thing to try. Besides, I don't do these runs to compete against the other shooters...
I am sure it was posted earlier but what rifle are you running. Hench pointed out a nice swede Mauser on the forum about a month ago, I thought long and hard before passing. The 6.5 X 55 caliber would have worked perfect because I have projectiles & powder.

The only person at these matches I really feel like I have to beat is my brother, I don't think he cares if he comes in second to last as long as I'm last lol. As Kennedy pointed out Smokey is on to something when it comes to men & merit badges.

Who am I kidding I like to compete even if it is going a tenth faster on the tread mill.

Yes, bragging rights is a big part of it between friends. That's why I have 1 free P-Mag to each competitor who trips or otherwise slows down Cavedweller during the run or shoot. A kick in the nuts gets a fully loaded P-Mag.

I'll be running with a Garand again. A 6.5 Swede would have been cool though. Maybe next time...
I run the guns I would use if SHTF. Maybe I am senile but I often consider another Garand, one with a new barrel, over an AR15. maybe you can confirm that for me. lol!

In regard to my goals, they are purely oriented around my previous performances. There is lot's of room for improvement.

Whaaaat!!!!

You started it!

I know... it really pisses me off to do it, but I'm not going to do the mil surp run with a rifle that I can't even get to feed right from stripper clips, and I'm not going to go out and buy another rifle just for this. The M39 is the only rifle I own that meets the requirements, besides grandpa's WWII bringback Arisaka (which there is no way in hell I'm using for something like this). I still won't make it easy on myself... I think I'll run it with the new 11.5" AR with Aimpoint, shooting XM193. Should be fun at 500 yards.

.
Justin hit the 500yd all three times, I believe he had a 10.5" barrel. He wasn't shooting XM193 that's for sure.
