An option instead of bringing extra full mags is to bring some loose or strippered ammo and reload on the move...I've done that and/or redistributed on the past runs.

I usually load level to my tacos on my weak side as I go thru the stages. That way I'm not having to pull mags from my strong side.
Shakyhand (and others) - do you know what your total gear weight was last year? Are you doing the same this year?

All year long, and especially after seeing the course of fire this year, I'd planned to go lighter and hopefully faster. But after rewatching all of last year's match video - ESPECIALLY THAT LAST STAGE - I decided to bring six FAL mags again. I probably won't need them all, but I'll be damned if I'm going to drive all the way to Oklahoma just to run out of ammo at the end! That makes 40lbs total to carry (clothes and shoes included).

Oh well. If it was easy, everyone would do it!

I'm planning on lightening ammo for sure. Only 18 total hits needed for pistol, my mags hold 19 each, I'm a good pistol shot, I really only need 2 pistol mags, unless the tree is all rusted up....

Matt, I weighed everything after my training today: 24# gear, ammo and weapons; 12# clothing including boots.

Its anal I know, but I keep track of my clothing combinations for each trail run and training session so I have a good idea what to wear for different conditions. Wear too little and you'll freeze, wear too much and you'll sweat... then freeze.

On another subject, my buddy and I had fun in the snow and wind today. Ran 3 miles in some challenging terrain and shot from far away, went 8/8 on a USPSA target from 500 and 3/5 on a 8" circle from 300.

Forecasted low in the morning is 16 degrees. Might be a good time to do a practice run.

I'm going super light for this one. My regular carry holster, one spare pistol mag pouch on regular carry belt - 2 AR mags in back pockets - No water. Clothing will weight less than 2.5 pounds, not counting my boots.

Takes experience and confidence to run like that and I ain't there yet. Excess is my security blanket. [emoji4]

I will try to get weights, the pistol mags I have been contemplating, I ran two pistol mags the first two, Pawnee Run guns & in probably 10,000 rds through my glock running Dawson+5 base pads I have never had a problem with bullets getting stuck in magazine. I fired the pistol on top of pond dam I had mag malfunction (bullets stuck in bottom f'n dirt from the course), dropped mag, reloaded with partial mag then I decended down the hill & I am thinking, how many bullets are in this mag, I made sure not to miss and ended stage with slide locked back after last shot. I now consider what if RO accidentally does not get a time, doesn't hit start, timer malfuntioned, dropped timer, cow or competitor magically shows up in impact zone, causing a ceise fire or lost mag. I think I am carrying three pistol mags or 2 and a half, topping off a pistol mag with loose rds is an option but I worry about adding dirt with bullets. I must be getting old and superstitious.
For the record I am a minimalist as far as ammo and gear, I took 58 rifle rds (5.56) first Thunderbird match and almost ran out. From RO'ing and attending the courses I have seen people run out of ammo.
Matt I remember looking at how much ammo you had and thought wow 120 308 rds, that's heavy.
Last January, I shoot 6.5 Creedmore, I started to only take 47 rds went back and grapped 11 more for a total of 58 rifle, that was a last minute change after hearing about people running out of ammo. My "cocky" but honest thoughts were I did not plan on missing. I shot rifle clean except last stage on mound. On the mound Derick the guy that took second talked me into shooting off hand. I had a hold my beer and watch this vision, and that is were I screwed up I went through 17-19 rds and almost timed out. I knew to drop down and build a solid shooting position, but well testosterone & peer pressure got me.
I will try to get a run weight, I wanted to post about why I feel it is important to bring plenty of ammo.
Just my thoughts,
Corey
