I don't patch my development boxes. Microsoft Updates has adverse impacts on my IDEs and compilers.

Well at least it's stable.

Keeping my laptops on kill the battery lifespans of my batteries. I wish plugging them in would bypass the battery and not wear them out.

heat and discharge cycles do that.

i always suspend my laptop (at home), but my coworker just leaves his running at his desk all the time. we got our laptops at the same time, but his battery is holding up a lot better than mine.

anyone who complains of heat what processor are you running and what type of CASE to cool it, my homebuilt i5 2500k overclocked to 4.5 ghz is silently humming along fine in my air conditioned room, little to no heat put off when taxed.

it puts out heat, you're just moving it. Finally gave up on the LGA771 Mac Pro?

Got a temperature monitor? If not you may be surprised at how hot the CPU runs even at no load. Unless you're a PC techie type you would be amazed at how hot a clean dust free air cooled CPU unit runs under full load. Based on you overclocking your i5 by 80% it seems likely you're using liquid cooling on the thing. Most PC users won't be.

When's the last time you opened the case and examined the CPU module? If it's been a while I'd recommend you do it. Again you may be surprised at just how much dust there is built up on and around the cooling fins and in the attached fan. As dust builds up the ability to remove heat from the CPU goes down and your normal operating temps will creep up over time. Heat is the main killer of CPU's.

Temp limits vary by CPU. Do you know what they are for yours?
