Guess it depends on what other contaminates found in the volcanic glass, cave men did not need deal with metal detectors or even rusty metal for quite some time. With technology today, I wouldn't count on much of anything being non-detectable when even a random patdown will get someone gigged. That’s clever, cave man tech.
I use the Cold Steel cane. Going though TSA, they asked if I needed to use their wooden one to go through scanner, as they held mine for a moment. I never stowed mine in any aircraft. I flew 4 times with it back and forth to California.Absolutely. They all go thru scanners, only restriction is must be stowable in overhead bin, or flight attendant will put it in their closet up front....most folks' canes will fit, only longest for tallest people will not fit...I believe a 38" just fits.
You'll get tagged one of these days for stowage....maybe....those stupid rules change at some idiot's whim, maybe they realized a handicapped person minus cane might really mess up evacuation, but normally all loose items are stowed for take-off/landing, and often canes were to be (maybe) left stowed, I never tried to force the issue.I use the Cold Steel cane. those 4 trips entailed 16 total flights, lol. My knee replacements kept them from taggin meYou'll get tagged one of these days for stowage....maybe....those stupid rules change at some idiot's whim, maybe they realized a handicapped person minus cane might really mess up evacuation, but normally all loose items are stowed for take-off/landing, and often canes were to be (maybe) left stowed, I never tried to force the issue.
Meanwhile, these sail thru metal detectors with no problem...

Last time I flew I saw people with metal canes. I know I saw the TSA looking at one in line.Speaking of canes, do you know if you can board a plane with a metal walking cane?
@ mtngunrYep, knife fighting is for those who enjoy bleeding, scarring and loss of limb function, on a good day. My canes are 1 1/16th" diameter impact grade hickory, with sharp crook...they hit hard at tip, sides, ends and middle. I have used sticks against knives several times, and knife loses every time. As I am fond of saying, someone whose arms and legs no longer work is no longer a threat. As for plastic knives, zytel will not snap near as easily as epoxy laminates, but with penalties today in most places knives banned, and them not invisible to scanner or pat down, and yet a pretty rotten knife while may as well be the finest blade ever made as far as the law now concerned, I gotta as "why?", especially when you can carry a crooked cane ANYwhere (which is not the case with a straight stick/knobbed stick, fyi, some localities demand a crook for legality).
