Some guys down in my hometown put in some major wind turbines... They were $12k out of pocket. The rest was gov subsidized, $102k total cost. But it usually pays them a few hundreds each month from the elec coop. Huge turbines.
Solar panels are just as expensive, as are the batteries you'll need to store that energy. Plus you'll need dedicated space for all that junk.
Living green/off grid is not hard... But it takes serious pockets to do successfully.

"Off the grid" is much more difficult than "on the grid but with lower bills".
