Have you slugged the bore on that rifle?
How does the crown look?
I had a heck of a time getting my 30-06 to group a boat tail bullet. It just would not do it.
I took a picture of the crown then loaded the picture onto the computer..Crown did not look really good.
I chamfered it with a marble and baking soda paste.
That fixed it.
I have a 22 mag I was not impressed with..I got to looking much closer at it and the crown has been egg shaped by the previous owner and his cleaning rod.

Shoots groups at 60 yards that look like your best target above.

Swampratt, I am not unhappy with the groups and am at the point where I start fine tuning and doing more case prep. Here are some pics. I yield to your expertise on the condition of the crown. It looks like it might be a little jagged but I am not certain.

I’m going to post this question for the others in this thread. We mostly all load 17.5 gr of Alliant 2400 and 180 gr bullets. 2400 is getting hard if not impossible to find. If got 5477 and 4759. If I needed to switch powders, which one and what weight?

I can't comment on the crown, but I will say that I'd be running .311 bullets in that barrel. Cast or condoms, but 311.

Target #2 was a .308 and target #3 was pulled factory bullets that were .311 but only at the base of the bullet. They are also hollow base bullets. The 168s actually grouped a little better. Decisions, decisions. I think further testing is needed before I make up my mind but I think both grouped well even though they were different weights and diameters. I have been reading about it and most would do what you recommend as long as pressures do not go to high which they shouldn't with the charge I was shooting. Thanks for the tip.

I just looked at a Nov 2019 chart. 2400 is ranked #54. I couldn't find the other 2 you listed. At lease I have FPS for the 2400 in case I need to change and compare. I only have the 1 pound.

Lyman#4 shows 5744 starting at 21.5 grains with the Lee C312-185, at 1611 fps from an M39. I think it goes to 30 grains? I've got some Buffalo Rifle, which is supposed to be the original Accurate 5744, but I haven't tried it yet. I know Ron Doggett is shooting it, or at least was.

I've also shot 4198, at 24 grains with the NOE 316299 clone, at 210+ grains weight.
Mostly I shoot the 2400 load because I have a bunch of it.

ETA: I've never used 4759
