I’m working on a wood project where I need bolts with wide, flat, and thin heads, a short all-threaded shaft, and a screwdriver slot in the end. Overall length less than 3/4”, and I wasn’t finding anything online that would work. So I fired up the lathe and made my own with a 5/16-18 pitch - first time I’d made a fastener, too:

It really was pretty simple once I figured out the dimensions based on two prototypes I’d made. I just turned down a 1” thick round bar stock of aluminum. The tedious part was cutting the slots into the ends; I don’t yet have a mill, so I used a good old-fashioned hacksaw. Fortunately I had the presence of mind to do this before parting the first bolt off the stock ;)

Inspired by posts on here about making your own knife (and constantly watching YouTube videos about knife making), I decided to try my hand at it myself. Right now I just have the forge made. Now I need to find some hardenable steel and something to use as an anvil.

Not the best thing in the world for an anvil, but I've carried about a 10" or 12" section of railroad "track." I started carrying it when we were on the farm/ranch so that I'd have a hard surface when hammering on something in the field instead of the shop. I still carry it, even in our RV, but it doesn't get much use anymore.

Considering the price of actual anvils, this is what I'm currently looking for. You'd think those things are made of gold or something. Basically looking for an ALT, anvil looking thing. [emoji38] [emoji38]
