And back in the 60's when I used a BB gun and firecrackers to protect my house and property against the horde of attacking plastic army men who were strategically hidden in caves, trees, bushes and foxholes. I was a demolition expert back then. I could blow anything up. We had actual M-80's to play with.

Or when I used bottle rockets with hot wheels cars to try and make a rocket car. (never could get it to go in a straight line more than a foot.)

They sure took a bunch of the fun out of the neighborhoods now.
I grew up in Orange city Orange county California...all different nationalities was mid 1970's and everyone got along.

Not so anymore..
I remember late 1970's friends asked if i had cable TV..
I was like yes i have it..had an antenna on the roof that you turned for best reception dad would hollar when the picture was clear...had a cable attached to it that ran under an almost closed window and into the back of the TV..
You get off your kester and turn the knobs..
Riding our bikes 8 miles to lake draper was a daily event...take an air pump and duct tape and fishing pole.

If my kids wanted to ride like that i would flip out.
kids today beg rides to go 1/4 mile.

Dlbleak and I would ride miles away from home on our bikes to buy fireworks in July. We'd ride out to the racetrack on Sunday to see if there were any smashed up cars from the races the night before. We'd ride to a hobby store to buy model kits and supplies then race home to build them.
I remember when Pong came out; the first video game that would connect to the TV. It was a huge deal at the time.
Yeah, I remember those things!

I also remember patches of wood flooring showing thru the spots of worn out linolium. Im sure that crumbling paint was lead based but that couldnt be any worse than skiming a film of oil off the well water.

Good old linolium! Seems everything including the countertops and tables were covered in that stuff. I'm sure that old paint was lead based but even though I'd pick at it flaking off the windowsill during a spring rain, dreaming of it stopping to play outside again, it never effected me.

I too can remember all that. You left out wagons, cap guns and forts.

Oh wagons... I had an old Radio Flyer that I don't even remember ever being new. It was permanently rusty and we used to haul it with a rope behind our bikes, in constant fear of the dreaded "handle whip" when it caught the rhythm of the pedals and flipped over, hopefully with nobody inside. Our best fort was a huge doghouse that my friend three doors to the east had. I had a pair of silver cap guns with plastic stag grips and must have run a million rolls of caps through them. I was the Lone Ranger most of the time.

And there were only a few channels anyway, so we all came to school talking about the latest episode or special that was on. It was a given that we all watched it.

Air pumps were a part of my daily life. Whether keeping my old tires inflated, repairing a tube with one of those rubber patches and a tube of cement, or just putting it on my tummy and making fart sounds...

We saved every penny that wasn't already spent on candy and buy as many firecrackers as we could. The closest stand to us was across the big 4 lane "highway" leading out of town so we felt so daring crossing to get to all of that summertime explosive booty.

Keep them coming guys... what you you "remember when?"

I put lots of miles on my Schwinn Stingray bike and my go cart. We had a water cooler also.

The policeman down the street wanted to see my air rifle. He thought it was a BB gun, but was just an air rifle.

We had cha. 4,5,9, and 13. Now there are a ton of programs to pick from on cable. Many not worth a flip.

Stingray, yes many miles on a stingray.

Panzer tanks and shermans were made just for July 4th fun.

I remember, and am thankful I happen to have lived through what I feel were the best times this country has had, kid in the 50's, teenager to young adult in the 60's. Makes me sad that our grandchildren and great grandchildren will never experience the freedom we had.
