So as someone that's never been in the military... what exactly would these 'war games' consist of? Cruising the ships around in formation, launching planes and doing drills of some sort? Forgive my ignorance, but i've always been curious.

Well, there are different types. Some games focus on attack/defense, electronic warfare (jamming, countermeasures, detection, etc), recon, search and rescue, or all the above at the same time.

Basically, the forces come together and act out scenarios that could happen in real life. You usually have your friendlies and aggressors, and you play war with the focus on certain objectives that need to learned and practiced in case the real thing ever happens.

It's like that old saying...practice makes perfect.

It's like being a kid and playing 'guns, cowboys and indians, cops and robbers, or army, or whatever'. Only with better toys and an objective for what you're acting out and trying to learn.

They can be quite fun (and quite tiring) to participate in (unless you have an inspector watching over your shoulder all the time, then it's like..."get the #$%@ away from me you make my nervous!"). ;)

I think the worse moments in wargames I've had were when we had to stay in MOPP-4 for extended periods of time (full chem gear). They like to schedule those in the middle of summer in Oklahoma when it's nice and hot hot hot outside.

Hope that made sense.

If you think MOPP-4 is fun, try a TAP suit for a few hours!!!!

Yeah, that pretty much covers it.
Depends on who is in charge whether it is worth the effort of just theater.
Some of the ones I participated it were a major joke.
Surface forces couldn't find us. They had us turn on "The Gadget" (noise maker to make us sound like a soviet sub). Surface forces couldn't find us. P3s couldn't find us. They had us broach the ship (stick the top of the sail out of the water with masts extended) They couldn't find us.
They had us launch a flare.
AHA! We've got you now! We win.
Of course all the while we had firing solutions on a carrier and 2 destroyers.
