Sorry, I was messing with it right before I headed to the woods. I unloaded it and checked how much force was needed to close the bolt. Man you really have to slap that thing closed. I didn’t feel comfortable doing that with a loaded gun at the range. Didn’t want the primer to ignite and have discharge. Now that I know what it takes, I’m ready to give it another try.

When I first got my savage the bolt was super hard to open and close. It was the breech plug. Savage sent me a new breech plug and bingo solved the problem. If you think its more force than what should be necessary you are probably correct in thinking that.

Savage no longer makes plugs, but that link I posted will have some you can buy if you decide it needs a new one.
