Savage.308 22" barrel I like shorter what is wrong with me.

I bought a Savage Axis rifle with tan stock with black speckles on it many months ago and finally shot it.
It shot good. Trigger needs adjusted as it is a bit heavy.
I ran some rounds through it that needed emptied. Lapua neck turned cases 42gr IMR4064 168eldm.

I was thinking Man I need to work up loads for this rifle and then thought I HATE 22" long barrels after cutting many barrels shorter.
Those short barrels 16.5-18 really shoot well.. Accuracy node is wider and does not change as much when the temps change.

Then I thought quit screwing up a good rifle someone could use as is and thought maybe someone has a .223 rifle they would trade me and then I thought CUT IT to 16.5or 17 and see what happens.

I then stuck it in the safe and got out a 30-06 that needed a scope on it.
Mounted the scope and thought man that 22" 30-06 would be sweet at 18"..Stupid loud I would bet.


I thought farther and was thinking short 30-06 at 16.25" would probably have nearly the velocity of my 18" .308.
Then thought man that 30-06 and 110 v max from the shorty********* pure awesomeness.

I gotta go find my hacksaw.
Or go make some grape jelly. I need grape jelly and it makes a good Christmas present to go with homemade deer jerky.

Just finished 2 batches of grape jelly and even cleaned up all the kitchen.
Now to make some loads for 30-06. 178 A max mixed with H4350.

I prefer short barrels too, I don’t know why. I’ve got a Marlin 336LTS that’s got a 16.5” barrel and a tikka t3X with a 20” tube. Always fancied the carbines.

Well, he does use a plugged in potato for a phone and I don't recall him posting any pics. So there may not be any out there.

I’ve always been a fan of a good hacksaw and some nice rasps and a bit of cold blue.

54.5 gr H4350 is my sweet load for 180 gr bullets.


I like 18" barrels, .308 seems to like them also, though you give up a little in velocity. .30-06 needs at least 20". Both of mine are 22". My buddy barreled his at 24" and it is a tack driver. Had a customer order a 28" barrel in .30-06 AI

I didn't like the look or carry, but the velocity and accuracy was phenomenal.
