seasoning a new cast iron grill?

I have a fairly thick sheet metal fire box on my cooker. When it starts to get rusty on the outside, which happens a couple of times a year, I spray it with a coat of PAM and let it smoke off while it heats up. I am using a 15 year old grill so far.

Thanks for the above info on seasoning cast iron ware. I have some older pans I need to clean up and season. Wifey hates cast iron, I love it.
