In the eyes of our gov't and corporate overlords this is the next best thing to a Federal Police Force. Many police departments have a residency requirement. It only makes sense that police are motivated as part of the community they serve. Immigrants who have entered the country illegally, what communities do they actually serve and are part of? They broke federal law to get in, first time I've seen departments recruit felons to serve.

I was wrong about illegal aliens and guns. As long as it's for a law enforcement job they can carry a gun.

Speaking of that, do a Google about gangs and infiltration with the LAPD and the LASD. It seems both departments have officers who have formed gangs inside their departments and gang members who became officers in both departments.
