Block and ignore. I do a signed dated Bill of Sale and meet at the tag agency to do the sale. They do that and transfer the title immediately or no deal. Your tie to the vehicle ends right then and there. I’ve had people not switch the title and still drive the vehicle around. Document and protect yourself so there’s NO possibility of recourse.

There's a portion of the title these days that you can rip off and turn in at the tag agency for that reason. Pretty sure there is. That way you don't have to worry about the title after selling. You need insurance to transfer title at the agency so sometimes that can't happen quickly enough.

I've heard several people who sold a car had this happen to them and there's always a bunch of drama.
Don't need that crap.

Last time I sold a truck private, I wrote up a nice bill of sale, listed known defects, spelled out that it was As-Is etc. He hands me money and drives off.

About a month later I'm doing some wood work when a squad car rolled up to my house. I killed the table saw and went standing in the cameras field of view. Guy asked if I'd been to Arkansas recently and told him no. He asked if I had a gray truck and I said "yeah until about a month ago and I have the bill of sale that removed it from my hands".

Turns out the dude that bought it never registered it, drove it into a gas main that blew up and he dumped it and ran. Officer asked if I wanted it back and I said in no uncertain terms it was not mine to receive back and I wouldn't accept it and any liability that went with it. Never heard back after the officer drove off.

I sold a car once and meet at the tag agent to do the paperwork got everything signed and 6 months lattter got a toll bill from Texas, found out thru paperwork that they had never got the title changed into their name cost me 4 times the toll bill to get it straightened out quess i could have just paid the bill cause it would have been cheaper but who knows how long it would go on down the road.

Worked with a guy that sold the same car 4 times cause people wouldnt get it changed into their name and the LE would call saying it was abandon and he would go get it and resale.

I've sold a couple vehicles where the buyer never put it in their name. Both times I got a notice from a wrecker service telling me I owed them $$$ to get my vehicle back. There was also a line on the notice telling me to ignore if I no longer owned it. Ignored it both times.

Offer a 30-30 warranty next time.
30 feet or 30 seconds once it leaves the driveway.

The last car I sold the tag office said that the $10 title transfer off the bottom of the title really wasn't necessary anymore, since you own the tag now and should remove it when you sell the vehicle. Don't know if that's 100% true, since I'm not sure how that would prevent scenarios like the above crash into a gas line. Probably fixes the random toll charge problem. And not having a tag probably does make it more likely the buyer registers the vehicle.

Probably not a bad $10 spent still as I write this..

But other point is that it's a good idea to remove your tag before selling.

The plate no longer follows the vehicle. Keep the plate when you sell. There is a tab on the bottom of the title that can be signed by both parties but I would still rather sign and notarize a bill of sale. Insurance is a phone call and card transaction over the phone. I’d rather wait the 30 mins for that to happen. If they want it bad enough they’ll make it happen. I switched a title the other day into my name and didn’t have a bill of sale since I got it at auction. The tag agency had me fill out their bill of sale form. She said it was required by Oklahoma law. I haven’t verified that yet. Just FYI

Edit: if it’s a project vehicle I’ll have them black tag it so they don’t have to insure. I WANT that vehicle out of my name, in all legal aspects, when I sell it.
