It's a cabinet shop. Most days I don't have to work with him. It's only when we have to go on deliveries together that the problems really arise. We lost our delivery driver, and I'm the only other person in the shop that can handle the truck/trailer. He's the only other person in the shop physically capable of picking up and carrying the necessary weight.

Frankly, I wish he'd just go ahead and hurt himself badly enough that he can't work for awhile.
I hate say it as I do not believe in hurting people that I do not have too, but next time you two are lifting something and he makes even a slight bobble, drop your end. By accident of course.

I'd just mess with him when out on deliveries..."did you call the customer?" Nobody told me to. Yeah, told you two times earlier. Don't you remember? No way man. Yeah, no **** why is your memory so bad? Then, when you get back to the shop, send him to do something like park the truck then go buy all of the sour cream and onion chips from the vending machine and hide them in your desk. Oh, and the Doritos too. That should get him to shaking pretty good!

Four years of this? Your boss is an idiot. I hate to say it but yeah, I'd quit at that point. You're obviously a good worker and finding another job won't be the end of the world. You should tell the boss - the one that does the firing, not just any boss - that he is the reason you're leaving. You are tired of dealing with his BS.

If they want to keep you they will. If not, their loss.

Could you do the job yourself? As in, hang out a shingle and hire out?

I understand the reasoning but I don’t think dropping and potentially damaging someone’s custom cabinets which they’ve patiently waited for as a very good solution. If you and the stoner are the only two capable of lifting the weight and you’re the only driver I’m guessing this is a small shop. Just me but I’d have a frank conversation with the owner letting him know that in good conscience if you suspect this guy is stoned while you are working together and there’s a risk of either of you being injured that you’ll have to refuse to make the delivery out of caution. Don’t be a weenie about it, simply delineate a boundary you’re not comfortable crossing. If your boss respects your decision, which is completely reasonable BTW then mission accomplished. If he throws a fit then you clearly don’t have his respect and I’d have a hard time working for someone that didn’t respect me. $0.02
