If you want to make exceptions for 'heros' then we have to be clear who is and who isn't a hero, now don't we.

Good point...

... honestly  I don't have an answer.

This conundrum is to me kind'a like the ole saw about I may not be able to describe good art but I know it when I see it.

Darned if you do darned if you don't... I hate this but I do side with the business and certainley the hostess for following the rules her employer had in place.

My grandfather was a bomber pilot during WWII and I have the utmost respect for men of the greatest generation, but he never went to town without wearing a clean shirt with a collar and at least a nice pair of blue jeans.

One of the things I remember about him, we finished mowing the yard one summer weekend and we were going to dinner in Chickisha at long john silvers and I remember we had to wait for him to change clothes because he wouldn't go to town in a tshirt.

And i would agree with you about that, too. I think the restaurant was dumb to do what it did. I think the bigger issue that has been brought up, though, is that some people who commented on the article think that veteran status should override that policy.

If the manager had sense he probably would have handled it differently, but i certainly don't think he had to out of any sort of guilt or gratitude to the vets. He should have said something like 'come back tonight dressed appropriately and the meal is on us' or something like that.
