Our journalists, print and other media alike, seem to know only one phrase to tell us somebody fired a gun or guns more than once. "shots rang out" is of course the cliche that has been used just a few too many times.
Since I can't do anything about the fiscal cliff, or anything the asshats in Washington are doing, or won't do, or can't do, or the A word, or the recent election, or most other things that do or should get locked, I go on tears about the little things. Horrifying cliches, and people who are functional illiterates who try to post here--though I don't post about that, all dialogue is internal.
Could we suggest to the media some alternate phrases for gunshots?
Shots were fired
Shots sang out, accompanied by bells
BOOM BOOM BOOM was heard in an alley
Evil weapons were heard in use
I am sure some of our creative members can offer some better alternatives.
