My mom lives in a old apartment in the Paseo art district in the city it is one of those that are 4 apartments in 1 building. About a week ago it was around 2:30am and she hears her front door rattling, and someone trying to get in. fortunately it was her drunk neghibor. This scared her so much that she is giving up her lifetime fear of guns, so she calls me and says she wants me to bring her a gun so she can defend herself at home, I got so excited, I brought her out to my house to teach her how to shoot. I let her take my LCR with crimson trace. so now she has some home protection
I was just so excited when I heard her say she wanted a gun, I had been trying for years to get her to get one

Fortunately for me my mom grew up around guns but it's awesome when a non-believer sees the light and sees that a firearm can be a "tool" to protect someone's life and not a "needless weapon" to end someone's life.

Congratulations on showing your mom the light and hopefully her neighbor will sober up and nor knock on the wrong door.

Defending herself is alot more than just having a gun. Now that you have put a gun in her hands you have a responsibility to work with her and train her how to use the weapon. If you don't all you have really done is given her a false sense of security.

I get calls all the time from people that think they want a gun to defend themselves. Many of them after talking to them I suggest they get some pepper spray as it is pretty obvious that is going to be the best thing to keep them out of trouble.

We are very fortunate that we have so many good trainers in OK. I STRONGLY suggest you get her some FORMAL training so she understands the responsibility she has, and she understands how to use it.

Lastly what have you done to help your Mom secure the weapon when she isn't there?

Good fou you.
As you said you showed her how to use it.
I'm guessing you covered safety.
I'd suggest that you pick up a little 22 and get her fully hooked on shooting.
My mother was deathly scared of firearms her whole life.
She paid the price for that fear a couple times.
But she really never got to the point she'd have one in her house.
There are lot's of older people changing thier minds these days.
Be patient with her as she learns.

Good for her.

Good for you.

I can't even start to tell you how long it took GC to get me where I am today. Lone Wolf'49 STILL gives me a hard time about the first time we met (at the range) ... (under duress) ... (I didn't want to be there and I was pretty vocal about it) ... (Yeah, whodda thunk it, huh??)
