I get by just fine with an old Spyderco folding knife I got about 15 yrs ago...I use it to cut open boxes, pry out stuck .22 brass, open mail, etc. I even used to cut some tough left-over pizza the other day. It won't shave the hairs off your arm or anything, but I just think of it as a tool.

Expensive knives just never have rung my bell. To each their own eh?

My dad always carried a knife. I've carried a knife since I was 10 years old. My oldest son carries one now.
It never fails that when you're at work or with a group of people that someone hollers "hey" has anyone got a knife to cut this thing or open something?"

I've carried knives made by Buck, Benchmade, Cold Steel, Puma, Camillus, CRKT and lots of others that I've worn out and can't remember.

People seem to go through stages with knives, like with guns. Some people never get past stage 1, others go swiftly to stage 3.

1. Pragmatic. It's useful to have a knife on you for chores, gardening, opening letters and packages, etc. Most people who are individualistic enough to carry a gun for self-defense will also appreciate the utility of having a knife of some kind.

2. Serious Pragmatic. Owning a knife or two and learning what they can do, you begin to want multiple knives optimized for different tasks. So you might want a hunting knife, a defensive carry knife, a knife for pocket chores, and a really small knife. Like the different clubs in a set of golf clubs.

3. Intrinsic. People get bit by the bug and start collecting and appreciating knives for their own sake. Sky's the limit on your wish list at this point.

Personally, I am at stage 1 with knives, starting to edge over (pun intended) to stage 2. I own one good EDC knife (Benchmade mini folder), and an identical backup in case my EDC gets broken or lost. That's all. Five years ago, I neither owned nor carried a pocket knife. Today, I feel naked without one. Lately I've been wanting to try out a larger folder, or maybe a fixed knife ...

Ive had a love affair with them ever since I was little kid like most guys. I collect em. Most anyone close to me knows I love them as much as my firearms. My mom brings them to me as gifts when she is traveling any where in the world- recently a Tree brand pocket knife from Germany and one of those knives with the bone handles they cut fish with in Alaska. For myself I dont buy anything ultra expensive, like guns, only what gets the job done and what I can afford, and like alot of my guns, most of them never leave the house. I do like to always have one on me,especially when I will be in those places where we cant carry a gun- makes sense to not have your gun on you in a bar when drinking, but I would never be there or most any where without a blade in my pocket.

Definitely category 3.

Get off my lawn.
I always tried to stay away from the knife thing. I get so fascinated with them I usually end up playing with them and cutting myself. I've done it several times. In the past few years I've gotten over this and I love knives. I feel naked if there isn't one within reach. Probably spent 4-5 years in stage 1 and in the last year or two I've been in stage two.
