Seriously.

Talk of secession is talk of quitting. Quitting your citizenship, quitting your country. Its about giving up because the deck is stacked in some body elses favor. Freedom is not fair, it's not supposed to be. If your just blowing off steam, fine i get it, but understand you are not helping those who will choose to stand and fight as Americans. If you are serious, then either unfu*# yourselves and get with the program or GTFO because you are a part of the problem, not the solution. Dont misunderstand me, i am sickened by a lot of what i see happening in this country. That does not excuse me from my duty to do what i can to preserve the ideals of the Republic.
I stand with America, with its bad acne and huge johnson.

Last I checked, the US has nukes.

Bring it on. We're pushing 100,000 aging suburban desk jockies on blood pressure medicine. This petition isn't an attempt at a radical revolution - it's a peaceful protest, you butthurt lefties. We're just trying to get our out-of-touch country of 300 million people to pay attention to us before we have to take it to the streets. Our signature totals are a clear sign, that in this country of 300 million, the government is not responsive to the will of the people anymore. What else can we do, rhodesbe? Is every man not an island? The master of his fate? The captain of his soul? Get on board or get out the way, rhodesbe.

Funny thread except for one thing.

Y'all are missing the real issue. It's not about secession. No one can seriously believe that any state would/could take action to do so. All the talk about it is just so much wishful thinking by those that are fed up with the current state of affairs.

The real issue is that to the best of my knowledge never in the history of the USA since the Civil war has anyone been fed up with the US government or the results of an election to the point that over 600,000 Americans from 30+ states have gone on public record stating that they want their state to secede from the union. And for ever yone of those 600,000 that signed how many Americans feel the same but just won't go on public record saying so.

It may seem silly to many - hell - most - but this whole secession petitition thing is new. 600,000 signers may not seem like many out of the 320 million citizens of the USA but every movement, every war, the founding of every new nation has its beginnings rooted in little things.

Is the 2012 election the one that future scholars will look back on when reviewing the history of the USA and say that was the tipping point. That was the beginning of the end of the American experiment?

What
I would get out of this screwed up country in a NY minute and join with Texas and any other states who would do the same.

I am for letting this fiscal cliff come to fruition and let the Obama folks reap what they sow. Make them feel the pinch when the economy craters. My view is that there is no good end for the Republican House to give in to the pressure. This mess will never get solved until this country goes over the cliff and the impact hits the American people right smack in the face. In my opinion Obama and his administration simply can't be trusted. Plain and simple, I don't trust Obama.

I think people are mistaking "being fed up with progressive/changing demographics and values of the country" with "fed up with a detached federal government run amok".

Where were all these revolutionary badasses after the 1936 election? Why didn't they take our country back from a progressive socialist federal government 76 years ago? If only they had desk jobs and internet connections back then, we could have a more thorough historical collection of their "why I orrrtahs".

It seems like the states that are the biggest drain on the taxpayers are the ones petitioning to secede.
It might be best if we jettison the freeloaders before they change their minds.

The cartogram above shows a map of the United States with the sizes of the states exaggerated or reduced to indicate relative sizes of their net contribution to (blue) or net receipts from (purple to red, where red is the most receipts per capita) the federal budget. The biggest contributors and recipients are thus the biggest in the graphic, while those that are relatively neutral are smallest.
