Interesting story. I read about it at the visitors center at Niagra Falls. Went there for a weekend while attending a test and trial for a software system in Cleveland we were going to install at the power plant.
It was almost shut off then as it was -11 degrees with huge chunks of frozen ice a foot thick going over the falls.
What really impressed me other than the falls themselves on the Canadian side was the discharges from the hydro powerhouse upstream. Huge tunnels that one could easily go over the rail and walk up. It's mothballed now.
The American side is not very scenic like the Canadian side which is impressive.

Folks, wifey and I have been there. We spent a week enjoying the majesty and incredible power of the falls.
We took a guided bus tour, walked behind the falls, rode the Maid of the Mist into the fog of the bottom of the horseshoe falls, had poutine, yech, in the Niagara Falls museum, rode the jet boats, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. They told us this story and it was almost unfathomable that Mother Nature's falls could be stopped. But like the narrative said, it could only be done by Mother Nature.

Pics from our hotel.

\Interesting story behind this last picture, A scow that has been trapped over 100 years. Possibly my favorite story of the area.

I went a few years ago when I went to Toronto for work for a couple weeks. I was on the Canadian side and waved across to my fellow Americans on the other side. Pretty impressive.
