I remember when the Los Angeles class subs were the big dogs and there are still 24 in commission.
My impression was it was never decomissioned, but, I was wrong and it was stricken in 1942 (or 1944 depending on what you read) and effectively became a cemetery, pretty much putting the name up for grabs according to rule books....but my entire life, and for 18yrs prior, there has been only one USS Arizona to my knowledge, and strange that this should change now.
Back to the topic, having the new ship named for the state is a very big deal, especially a warship, the pride I know well from my home state where we kids collected change statewide to save our namesake from the scrapyard and it still visited today by huge numbers after half a century.

Construction of Oklahoma’s new namesake, the stealthy Virginia-class fast-attack nuclear submarine, is underway. At the commissioning ceremony in 2027, she will join the Naval fleet and enter service as a United States Ship. The pivotal moment is when the Commanding Officer and crew formally come aboard and bring the boat to life.

USS Oklahoma ship history is very interesting. She refused to be Seaworthy after she was sank.
In the first ten minutes of the battle, though, eight torpedoes hit the Oklahoma, and she began to capsize. A ninth torpedo would hit her as she sunk in the mud. 14 Marines, and 415 sailors would give their lives. 32 men were cut out through the hull while the others were beneath the waterline. Banging could be heard for over 3 days and then there was silence.

Not sure how that works, but read it in an article while searching the USS Oklahoma's History.
I didn't know about an honorary plank owner. My Dad was a plank owner on the USS Iowa, but it wasn't because of a donation.
Since this Post I have once again become interested in obtaining the service records of my Grandfather, 4 Uncles, and most recent my Nephew who was a Sailor/Navy Medic.
I have seen a picture of two of my Uncles while they were in Korea, one was a Marine, one was Army, the Army Uncle sort of went AWOL to find my Marine Uncle, while on a duty break. He snuck off without permission. Somehow he found out, or knew, where his brother was at in another area and Hitched rides on supply vehicles to get to him to visit. It just so happened while on his mission of visiting his brother, a military news reporter seen them together in a chow hall reading a local newspaper from back home, He snapped a picture and put it in a military news article, showing the two brothers reading their local paper, from back home. He never knew My Uncle had left his post area, without reporting or asking permission. Uncle made it back to his post without anyone knowing he had left to visit his brother. He later obtained a photo from the article the reporter had done, and it was sent to the local newspaper and was published in the local paper. It made headlines in the local paper, Two Brothers serving together in Korea the Headline read. No one ever knew that one was there away from his duty post. He also used to sneak of base at FT Sill during Boot Camp to meet his Girlfriend who became his wife shortly after bootcamp. My Dad would pick him up, somewhere along the perimeter fence, where he learned he could sneak out. As far as I know he was never caught in any of his shenanigans.
Just wanted to share the story. It is pretty light hearted and brings me a lot of cheer to think about it and my Uncles.
I would Love to Honor them by passing there Military Service Records on to future Family.
