I'm wondering whether a .22 LR would do the job on the zombies?

Of course it would. .22 LR would penetrate the zombie skull easily at short distances. I'm guessing at 50 yards or less. Ammo is light. You could easily carry a 1000 rounds or more with you. .22 long rifle would be my rifle of choice for zombie head shots.

Dealing with the dangerous humans out there in zombie land would be another thing. I'd prefer a heavier rifle round so I could put them down with just body shots..

I finally got around to watching last Sunday's episode and I think I saw a low profile rear sight on the back of the M4. Not 100% but I have seen a few rail mount rear sights that looked like what I saw.
