That may be correct, but I really don't care why. I think the story played out well in this iteration, and has worked well for this media. It sounds strange to say, but I think it might be easier to convey certain messages, such as a person's inner, evil motives, in a comic, than in a TV show. I also think it is easier in a comic to know how it is viewed before publication, than in a TV show, the actors have much more to do with that. In season two, Shane's death felt timely, and appropriate. It wouldn't have in season one.

Now why would they set it up, exactly as in the comic, and then spend a whole other season after they have clearly established a motive and a will, to tear him down and make him less likable?
So, I'm pretty sure that was the case.

I am glad you have so much insight into just what the writers were thinking. Can you provide any other insight on why they have departed from the storyline of the comic books in other areas as well?!

The facts are that everything after Atlanta and Shane still being alive is a complete departure from the comic books. For you to say that they had to tear Shane down before he was killed means the whole storyline in the comic books is wrong. The comic books should have torn Shane down to make it more appealling/appeasing to the readers for Shane to die since he was not painted in as a bad light beforehand. However, that didn't happen. Rick showed back up, Shane didn't like it, they got into a fight in the woods and Carl capped Shane. There was no tearing down of Shane before his death. The fact is they could have played it exactly like the comics did and used Carl's love and need to protect his dad as the reason he shot him.

The tv show probably would not be as well received if it was just a rinse and repeat of the comic books. You want to know what happens, then read the books. Not following the story exactly as the comic books makes it more interesting. The Shane part is just one of the many ways the tv show has been different.

In some ways, I enjoy the tv show being different. In other ways, I wish they would have just added more details into the storyline to build the characters and follow the storyline of the comic books. I will say the last couple of episodes have been very good and hope they continue on this path.

My wife and I have been debating who is going to get to kill the governor. I don't think it will be Darryl. I'm hoping michone gets too! They need a big event with her character to get her more involved in the group and solidly her position

Actually, Darryl doesn't know it was the Governor who killed Merle. I could actually see him blaming Rick for Merle's death, since Rick asked him to go on the mission.

Being as how Merle died at the meeting place that was chosen by The Governor and there were dead henchmen laying around, it's really not that hard to figure out.

Ok...those of you with DVR's......LOL

Look at when Merle is rollin up to the warehouse thing where he was going to ambush the governor....BEFORE that point the car he was driving had big chrome wheels and low profile tires on it......as he's first rolling up to the warehouse, the car has stock wheels/tires and hubcaps!!! Then in the very next scene it has the big chrome wheels and lo profile tires on it again. It MAY even be a different car entirely...but i sure noticed the wheel tire discrepancy...LOL

Noticed the same thing...thought I just couldn't see the rims because the wheels were moving
