My garage door opener refuses to open or close as long as the door is connected (it is a Genie with that screw drive). anyway, if you hit the button, you can hear the motor humming, but the screw doesn't turn. If you disengage the door from the screw, then the screw and motor turn normally. The door moves in the tracks freely, everything looks to be greased pretty well.

Actually, the door will close partially but when its about 2/3 of the way down it jams up and the screw stops turning and the door stops moving. Is this something I just need to buy a new opener for or is there maybe something else that I'm not aware of?

check your springs to see if one has broke. might need an adjustment.

my garage door has 2 springs, one broke and would open maybe 18" before stopping

Had both replaced and gtg

This is what I was going to say. If a spring broke, it won't open.

Check the quick release on the door that attaches to the screw drive mechanism. Could be jammed up or whatnot. Mine stripped out once and had to find a replacement part and bingo.

Thanks all. springs are good. with door disconnected i can open easily with one hand so its not that. I will try examining the quick release component more carefully. It may be that. Or maybe I will just have to bite the bullet and get a new garage door opener. I hear they aren't too difficult to install by oneself

Is there a stud with a spring and a nut sticking out of the back of it? If so it is the tension adjustment for the clutch. If yours has this try tightening the nut a turn at a time and see if it gets better.

If you need to replace, it isn't hard at all. Especially if you are going with the same brand. The hardest part of a garage door install is all the hardware and that's already done. The whole job should take about 30 minutes. Hopefully you can get the old one working.

Sounds like the drive screw is partialy stripped. They are made of plastic now adays. May have to replace it.

As far as I know the screws are steel but the attachment threads for the quick release are plastic. Mine are plastic on the quick release and stripped out several years ago and go a replacement part at a local garage door company for like $20. Once mine started to strip it got bad quickly.
