This happened with the Seattle gun buyback. The guns were supposed to go to the steel milk to be melted into a plaque for the "victims of gun violence" the plaque was never made as the guns got misplaced and made into rebar with the rest of the steel.

I used to live right above that mill, my house was fomer company housing for management.
Hmmm too bad I missed it, I've got an old damascus double barreled shotgun that I'd like to get rid of.
