I have read a few posts on other forums that indicate that Tuplumber is most likely correct. We don't use pressure regulators here in MWC so I don't know anything about them other than what other forums have posted. Basically they cost about $65 and take half an hour for an unskilled homeowner to install.

If they have two unions they don't take anytime to install. A lot of the new construction plumbers bypass installing the unions because the ones you solder in are cheaper. The ones that are soldered in can be a nightmare to change out if the installing plumber didn't leave you any room to cut it out between fittings.

If it requires soldering I would pay someone to do it. If there are unions than I would do it myself. Looks like it is time to break away some sheetrock and expose more of the pressure regulator.

If it is banging it is time to replace it. 10 years is about the norm for a residential pressure regulator. I have been replacing many in Broken Arrow that are in the same age range as your house.
