I won't mention any names. But this is from today's campaigning.

"This country does not just succeed when just a few are doing well at the top, It succeeds when the middle class gets bigger. Our economy does not grow from the top-down, it grows from the middle-out. We do not believe that anybody is entitled to success in this country. But we do believe in opportunity. We believe in a country where hard work pays off and responsibilities are rewarded and everybody is getting a fair shot and everybody's doing their fair share. And everybody's paying by the same rules. That is the country believe in. That is what we have been fighting for the last four years. That is what we're going to put in place in the next four years if you reelect me as president of the United States of America."

Middle class is such a cliche term. Everyone thinks they are middle class. I am married with no kids, make $22000/year (hopefully after a few years of flight instructing that'll go up) and frankly consider myself middle class. The guy down the street raking in $130,000 is upper class to me , but he probably considers himself middle class as well. I actually agree as well that no one is entitled to success. You have to work for it.

He says they believe in everyone doing their fair share, but that's not true. He believes in people at the top paying MORE than their fair share and allowing people to live off welfare in perpetuity.

I believe that what he means is that no one who is successful is entitled to the fruits of that success. There is the notion out there that if you're successful you must have taken advantage of someone to get there. You can't have come by it honestly. Thus the "fair" part of taking some of your success and spreading it around. There's nothing fair about 4% paying 35% of the tax bill.

I'm sure the guy down the street worked very hard to position himself to earn that $130k a year. Maybe not. Maybe he's the sort of fellow who can fall in crap and come up clean. Who cares? That's how I feel about it. Someone was willing to pay him that for what he provides them and have the means to do so. Why shouldn't he earn that much? People will do what they're paid to do. Even if they're paid $25,000 a year to walk to the mailbox for a check.

What the hell do I know?

I agree with Surveyor1653. I think what is being said is it doesn't matter how hard you work or what you risk, you do not deserve to gain more than those who do not risk or try to make themselves better.

We do not believe that anybody is entitled to success in this country. But we do believe in opportunity.

I heard this on Rush at lunch and though he was quoting some Republican who was critical of entitlement programs, and wants to have a free market and encumbered system that puts everyone on a level playing field. Someone who believes "success" should be laissez faire, and no person should be given an advantage to be better than anyone else in this country, be it upper class privilege or lower class handouts.

True story.

Then I realized who Rush was quoting, and he commenced to mincing words. Goes to show one can spin this either way, depending on their preference.

Who in this country is not playing by the same rules? Give me an example.
Who is not getting a fair shot? Give me an example.
I can tell you who is not doing their fair share. The Obama phone lady for one. And there are many more like her.

"That is what we're going to put in place in the next four years if you reelect me as president of the United States of America."

Why didn't he put that in place his first four years? Especially his first two years when his party controlled everything.
Does all this fall under the rich are not being taxed enough or is there more to it?
Would an Obama supporter please enlighten me?
