The Supreme Court ruled that it is legal for the Westboro Baptist Church to picket funerals. Despite that ruling, many cities and towns have passed laws that force the Westboro Baptist Church to stay a specific distance away from funerals.

That's a very misleading statement. The Court also held that such picketing is still subject to state regulations under Clark v. Community for Creative Non-Violence, 468 US 288 (1984). This means that laws that restrict the time and place of these protests (such as no closer than 500 feet, and no later than 1 hour before and no earlier than 1 hour after) are still considered Constitutional so long as they are reasonable.

I really hope the wbc are smart enough to not go anywhere close to funeral services or memorial services for the 20 dead 6 and 7 year old children. Getting beat-up would be the least of their worries. With 27 mourning families someone is likely to lash-out on the wbc

No, they are not smart enough and yes, there would be a lot of bad things that will go down when they do protest at the school. Shameful!

A small little part of me hopes they do go there to stir up trouble. I'd hope there are still some folks around there with a sense of right and wrong who would see to it they never go back to CT again!

I completely and totally despise the WBC freaks.

There is one interesting thing though that always happens when they pull one of their blackmail / attention capers is the debate on the 1st Amendment. What I find encouraging is no matter how much I and many others would really love to be able to stifle their vile blathering, millions and millions of Americans always stand up to protect the right to unabridged free speech. I only wish that those same Americans would also fight as hard and without giving an inch of ground when it comes to the 2nd Amendment as well.
