I remember going through the Winding Stairwell mountains or somewhere as a kid in the back of Grandma and Grandpa's chevy luv with my cousin. It had a camper shell on it with some homemade beds setup so we were in tall cotton. We laughed and wrinkled our noses at the brake smell blissfully unaware that certain death was a busted brakeline or piston seal away!

The longer they can sit rear-facing, the safer they'll be. Obviously you run out of height/weight boundaries.

I have a 2-year old rear-facing. We'll probably switch him sometime after his birthday. My 4yo and 3yo forward face.

The strap level depends on rear/forward face. For rear you want it just at or just below the shoulders. For forward you want it just above the shoulders.
The carseat manual says how to set them up properly for each, so be sure to heed that.

Here, but occasionally There.
Kudos, Sir, for caring so much for the safety of your family.

As for me, all we had in the Panhandle back in the '50's was an old International pickup. With the propensity of a dust storm at any time, the four of us crowded into the front seat of that pickup anytime we went anywhere.

That was also the pickup from which I shot a jackrabbit with the first shot from my brand new, $16 Remington model 514 single shot rifle.

Yeah, I can remember that but I can't remember where I put my........

We are going throught the same thing now. Our son is about to be 14 months. He's probably 28 lbs (after thankgiving lol) and I don't know how tall. His poor little legs have to be bent for him to be rear facing. I finally had enough of him being pissy riding around in the suv and turned the car seat around. I'm absolutely comfortable with him like that, but then, he doesn't ride in the car a whole lot so ymmv. The problem now is that if he drops a toy, it doesn't just go down to his feet where he can reach it. It goes to the floorboard.
