Walnuts, apple butter, berries, bananas. But it's gotta be steel cut oats. Instant is just mush.

+1 I love Red Mill Steel Cut Oats. It takes a little longer to fix, but when you have time it is definitely worth it. Can't stand the instant stuff. I love to mix a little honey in mine to sweeten it. Blueberries are great in oatmeal. We buy the frozen bags of blueberries from Sam's club, throw them in a bowl and put them in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds just to defrost them a little before mixing them in with hot oatmeal. This is a great way to eat it.

I eat my oatmeal every day before I go to sleep. I buy a big container of oats. I like to cook it on the stove,no instant microwave stuff. I cook 2 servings with water and a pinch of 50/50 salt (the sodium/potassium mix that my wife buys me instead of regular salt). After its cooked I whip it up with a little 1/2 & 1/2 and sugar (thats how my gramma made it for me) and I eat it with 2 pcs of toasted wheat bread plain and a big glass of cold ice tea or water. Makes me fall right to sleep.

My dad used to eat his oatmeal uncooked in a bowl with milk and sugar.

I burnt my kids out on it I guess. I bought them the packaged flavored kinds they microwaved every morning in the winters before school when they were younger. Now that theyre teens they eat cold cereal or fruit and coffee. Theyve promised to never feed oatmeal to their own kids some day. The wife wont touch it either as her dad made her and her sibs eat it every day too. I ate it as a kid and I still like it.

( Im all screwed up and not on the same schedule the rest of the world is on. I crash before noon, sleep all day,get up around 5p and start my day. After waking up I carb load,do either a weight or boxing or bicycle workout, carb back up,then later eat a small protein meal. And then go about my business. Later on my lunch will be about 9-10pm,my dinner will be about 4-5am. In between meals I snack on fruit or granola bars or protein drinks. At noon just before going to sleep is when I eat my oatmeal and it helps knock me out.)

All the toppings have been covered...

Other ideas:

Try different brands and types of Oatmeal, there are differences in taste and
textures, so find your favorite.

Also, I'm guessing it's for health reasons, so look at some cereals (Muesli, Kashi brands...etc.) there are comparable 'cereals' out there without having to eat traditional oatmeal...

Awsome.
Lots of good ideas yall gave me to spice it up! Grocery list just grew double the size lol!

+1000 on making it with milk. There is no other acceptable way.

After that, just put something sweet on it to lighten the taste and you're all set.

Guys ... DON'T buy that instant, pre-mixed, individually packaged stuff. If you don't like steel cut (my favorite) get a canister of Quaker Regular Oats (not the instant) and a measuring cup. Fish out how much oatmeal you want ... add the same amount of water ... and just about anything else under the sun ... butter (not marg), cranberries and pecans is my fav right now ... nuke for 45 seconds ... let set for a minute ... mix in a little milk to cool it off and enjoy.

A lot cheaper and just exactly the same as instant but not quite so mushy.

But seriously ... you haven't lived until you have eaten steel cut oats. Yummy!
