My granddaughter (16) lives in the OKC area (with her mom (my ex-daughter-in-law)). I was thinking it might help stretch her (granddaughter's) dollars if I gave her a sub card from Sam's.

How can this go wrong?

Keep in mind her mama isn't real great with money, it's either feast or famine, and I'm not real trusting.

If someone with a sub-card writes a hot check, is the main card holder responsible?

I think that's a never mind, I think you have to be over 18 to have a card.

I think some gift cards are in order if you want to help and limit your personal exposure. You might also get her the Dave Ramsey book geared toward teenagers. If mom isn't good with money and nobody is teaching her any different how is she to know any better??

Good luck. I know how hard it is to want to help and but know that there could be unwanted repercussions.

I LOVE DAVE RAMSEY!! I was already on my way, but his book helped me! I know owe ZERO dollars to anyone anywhere. No financing, no credit cards(the most evil things in the world), nothing!

Talk about a nice feeling. It was rough going and a little tough to stick to it for a while, but SO worth it in the end. It's nice to say it's mine, and really mean it!

I wish I could help her find a part time job. She had one, but, it was 3 - 10, 6 days a week. And I think that was too much for her (she's still in high school). The last time I gave her money ($60) I think her mom taxed it.

I've always thought basic money management should be a required high school class.

OMG that kind of stuff makes me furious ... I had a mom who was that way ... What's mine is mine and what's yours is mine. :angry3: When I was a senior in high school my mom told me I had to buy all my brothers and sisters school clothes and supplies for that year (there were 6 of them) in exchange for my room and board. I worked two part-time jobs (one of them was very close to being full time) and went to school all day.

I'll say one thing for her ... she has certainly earned herself a very, very special place in the afterlife ...

It took me years and years (literally) to unlearn all the bad habits I learned by watching that woman work. I was telling Dru last night that if I had known in my 20s what I know about money now my life would have been much easier and a lot more comfortable.

While I don't agree with everything Dave Ramsey says I think that 95 percent of it is spot on.

One of my sons goes to school and has a copy of my VISA.
He is trustworthy and I never worry about it. Works great, he charges, I pay.
In your case her mother is involved. I would treat it as if I gave the card to both. Either you trust both or you don't.
