I believe Obama will be the first to attempt at dictatorship. He has 3 time frames within which he can make his move. The first is before the end of 2012 if he loses in November. The second shot he'll have is some time within the next four years if he wins this November, or thirdly, he could run for a second term some time in the future if he loses in November.
There is a spoiler in this country to that part of the progression Obama would see himself as the likely dictator over: We the People are armed. If those arms aren't sufficient to keep us out of bondage, nothing will. With those arms, spiritual faith, and the courage to engage those arms and adhere to our faith, we should be able to leap from the threat of bondage right to liberty.
If we hold fast to those arms and faith, it just might be enough of a threat to those fostering complacency, apathy, dependence and bondage to foresee their unappetizing and likely deadly future and back off. It would be really nice to hover right between liberty and abundance wouldn't it! Faith and arms are all the tools we need to get there and stay there.

The 200 years cited in the OP is not really historically correct. However, real-time communications and technology have created some time compression. The cycles for empires grow shorter. We won't have a single dictator, but a visible Collective run by the Handlers. We are almost there.....
