I'm not buying the premise that we can't demand both behaviors from Law Enforcement Officers.

In my past life I worked in three cop shops for a total of 12 years,,,
Every agency had way too many individuals who were rude & crude on a daily basis.

These men could really only be described as thugs,,,
No better than the ones they claim they were keeping us safe from.

The chiefs and lieutenants all knew of there on-duty behavior,,,
But they were "good earners" who generated revenue for the government.

In the 12 years I was a CSO I saw this all the time,,,
I listened to the stories they told each other in the locker room,,,
I listened while this one cop bragged about how he made a college girl wet her pants.

My ex-wife was a police dispatcher,,,
The tales she would tell after work were horrendous.

The worst part was when she was new she hated this behavior,,,
As she got years into her career she became inured,,,
She made the same excuses the OP did.

These thug cops are not the majority,,,
There are plenty of good cops who do their job very well,,,
The sad part of the situation is the good ones condone the thug behavior.

No cop wants to be "Serpico'd" for bringing the thugs to account,,,
Honestly, this was the deciding factor when I turned down an academy spot.

I knew (know) that I would be that cop who ratted out on the bad cops,,,
I was also certain that it would get me fired within a year, or worse.

Too many police agencies are nothing more than a gang with a government license,,,
All because they condone thuggish behavior to generate income.
