Looks like a great gun to learn the self restoration process on.

Do some research, there are a lot of refinishing processes out there, just make sure you do not compromise the temper of your parts and such. You won't make it any worse.
Break it down and soak it in Kerosene for a few days, screws and all everything that ain't wood. Till you figure out what route you want to take.

Your damage simulates like it was behind the seat or under a seat of a truck and it bounced and rubbed those areas frequently. A good media blast and refinish could make it look brand new though.
That's what I thought, looks like a truck gun that was rubbing the seat frame every time they hit a bump!
I'd have it cerekoted, or leave it and shoot it.
Spray paint just flakes off over time
