Quoted from the post by n2sooners, the article appears to answer my question by mentioning that they could consider "lesser crimes" that were not specifically charged.

Of course it also mentions that while they wouldn't have to prove he acted with "depraved mind, hatred, malice, evil intent or ill will" like with the murder charge, they would still have to prove he didn't have any reason to fear he was going to suffer great bodily harm or death. So in order to get either charge they first have to prove he didn't act in self defense.

I saw in a CNN story that the jury has to be unanimous to convict. At this point I'd be surprised if that happened. Bad decisions were made by both Martin and Zimmerman, Just sad.
